Mesa Wins Final ASU 7v7 Tournament; Mountain View Wins Big Man Challenge

Big Man Competition
The final ASU Big Man Competition did not disappoint.
Many star players showed out Thursday night; here are some that dominated the day.
Desert Edge 2027 Defensive Lineman Yahzeen Zion
Zion is a 6’5 270-pound interior defensive lineman.
Zion is a menace in the trenches, and his strength is one of the best in Arizona.
He was causing chaos during the one-on-one session and kept winning every rep.
During the challenges, he was a big help and was a key reason why Desert Edge finished second on the day at the ASU big man competition.
Zion recently committed to Wisconsin and is in store for a big senior season.
Brophy 2029 Offensive Lineman Colin Itule
Itule is coming off a stellar freshman campaign and is looking even better this offseason.
His strength and size were great at ASU.
Even though he is only a 2029, his technique and pure skill at the position are already some of the best in Arizona.
Itule had to go against some of the best defensive linemen in Arizona, and he kept up with whoever was in front of him.
Itule has recently picked up offers from SMU, UNC, Missouri, UofA, Purdue, Penn State and Kansas.
Mesa 2028 Defensive Lineman Sione Taueli
One of the risers as of recently this offseason has been Taueli.
Rated a three-star prospect, the standout player was electric at ASU Thursday night.
He stands at 6’5 and uses his range and versatility to his full advantage.
Taueli was able to get past basically every single offensive lineman that lined up across from him.
Taueli recently picked up offers from Iowa State, Sacramento State, New Mexico, Kansas, Washington, Auburn, Kansas, Oregon State, Florida and UCLA.
Mountain View 2027 Offensive Lineman Tye Kennedy
This offseason has been indicative of why Kennedy is rated a three-star prospect.
Whether it was drill work or one-on-ones, he showed up.
Multiple times during the day, Kennedy came through with crucial points in the one-on-one portion of the day.
Kennedy has some of the best footwork and hand placement in the country.
He ended the day with multiple pancakes, and his skill set was on full display.
Overall, Kennedy was a big part of why Mountain View was able to win the entire big man competition at ASU.
Kennedy will announce his commitment on July 1st; his finalists are Cal, Arizona State, Michigan, Utah, Washington and Minnesota.
7v7 Bracket Play
The Brophy Broncos and the ALA Queen Creek Patriots matched up for an exciting quarterfinal matchup.
Entering the game, Brophy defeated Sunnyslope while ALA Queen Creek took down Basha Green.
The Broncos put points up on the board first.
New starter this season for the Broncos is 2028 quarterback Noah Stewart, and he was stellar on Thursday night.
Stewart started the game by throwing a perfect pass to 2030 wide receiver Karter Chamblin.
The Patriots were able to rally on offense, though, and take their first lead of the game.
ALA Queen Creek Cody Lalama is also a first-time starter this season, and he, too, had a great day.
Lalama got his team on the board after 3-star 2027 Oklahoma State tight end commit Talan Scott made an unreal one-hand snag for a touchdown.
The Patriots opted to go for a two-point conversion, which was successful, to give themselves an 8-7 lead.
ALA Queen Creek’s defense pulled through to get a stop and give the offense the ball back right away.
Throwing his second touchdown pass of the game was Lalama, who connected with 2027 wide receiver Stetson Agne for the score.
As the game dwindled down, the Broncos cut the lead.
Stewart marched the offense down the field and capped the drive by throwing it to 2027 running back Scout Kinkel for the touchdown.
Brophy got the ball back one last time with a chance to win the game.
The comeback was stopped short, however, as ALA Queen Creek’s defense got the stop.
ALA Queen Creek won 14-12.
One of the semifinal matches saw a highly anticipated CUSD matchup and a rematch of June 1st's UofA 7v7 championship.
The Chandler Wolves and the Perry Pumas faced off, with the winner headed to the championship match.
Both teams failed to score on their first drives.
On Chandler's second drive, though, they were able to strike first.
5-star 2027 Oregon quarterback commit Will Mencl got his team going.
Mencl connected with 2028 running back David Douglas in the middle of the field for a touchdown.
The Pumas would answer back, but it wouldn’t be an easy drive.
After getting down near the goal line, Perry found themselves in a 4th-and-goal situation.
The Pumas came through, though.
Perry 2027 Boise State quarterback commit Kael Snyder completed his first touchdown pass of the game to 2027 wide receiver Jaylen Singleton.
The Wolves and the Pumas kept trading touchdowns.
Mencl was able to complete his second touchdown pass of the game when he found 3-star 2027 wide receiver Maxwell Sprott to extend the Wolves' lead.
Perry kept on fighting back.
Only needing one play, Snyder threw a bomb to the left sideline to score the quick touchdown.
Perry was able to get a stop to give them a chance to take their first lead.
The Pumas would do just that.
For a second time in the game, Snyder and Singleton were able to get on the same page to score a touchdown.
Chandler wasted no time, however, taking back their lead.
Mencl threw his third touchdown pass of the game and gave the Wolves a 20-18 lead with only a minute left in the contest.
Perry needed a miracle to win the game.
In what was the play of the day, Snyder launched the ball 40 yards down the field as time expired.
Singleton caught the deep bomb over two defenders and gave Perry the victory.
The Hail Mary pushed the Pumas into the championship round.
The final ASU 7’s tournament championship saw a great matchup between the Perry Pumas and the Mesa Jackrabbits.
Perry had possession first and kept the momentum rolling from the previous game versus Chandler.
The game started with the duo of Snyder and Singleton.
Once again, the two would combine for a touchdown and give the Pumas an early 7-0 lead.
The Jackrabbits responded in a hurry.
Getting down the field methodically, Mesa, too, found the end zone on their opening possession.
2027 quarterback Derek Carr dumped it short to 2027 running back Rio Arnett for the easy touchdown.
In a flash, Perry would score right back.
Snyder stepped up to deliver a perfect deep shot to Singleton to give the Pumas back the lead.
While they were down 13-7 early on, Mesa rallied to score 20 unanswered points.
For a second time in the game, Carr dumped it low to hit Arnett.
The Arnett and Carr connection gave Mesa a lead they would never let up.
Mesa was using a two-quarterback system during the day and looked to 3-star 2027 quarterback Kane Anetema to finish the game out.
On his first drive, Anetema threw a fade route to 2027 athlete Kameron Williams for a 10-yard score.
The following drive proved why Williams is one of the best two-way players in Arizona.
After snagging a touchdown the previous drive, Williams would proceed to intercept Perry and give his team the ball back.
With only two minutes left in the game, the Jackrabbits tallied one more touchdown.
In a brother-to-brother connection, Kane Anetema found 2027 athlete Kingston Anetema on a short out route for the touchdown.
The touchdown put the game out of reach.
Mesa was crowned the champion of the ASU 7’s tournament with a 27-13 win over Perry.
