Big Man Competition
Here are some who made their presence felt Tuesday night during the third ASU big man camp.
Campo Verde 2028 defensive lineman Winston Wright
Wright was one of the top performers at the ASU big man camp.
During the 1-on-1s, he excelled off the edge, whether he was using pure speed or technique.
Wright was recognized for his performance as one of the best defensive linemen in the competition.
Overall, he should be a big help for the Coyotes off the edge this season.
Chaparral 2028 defensive lineman Zevry Walker
This offseason, Walker has been making a name for himself and picked up an offer from NAU at their big man camp on Saturday.
On Tuesday night, Walker continued to impress as he dominated competitions for Chaparral.
The mix of his size and speed makes him one of the more intriguing pass rushers in Arizona.
Liberty 2029 offensive lineman Isaiah Phillips
Phillips is a 6’10 offensive tackle with all the potential in the world.
At ASU big man camp, he put that potential to work as he was declared one of the best offensive linemen during the camp.
His height and strength were on full display during the 1-on-1 portion of the camp as he excelled.
Phillips will be a player to keep an eye out for as he could become one of the top prospects in Arizona in a few years.
AZ Compass Prep 2028 offensive/defensive lineman Isaac Cattanach
Cattanach was turning heads at ASU big man camp.
This will be Cattanach’s first year with the Dragons, but he has already made an immediate impact.
He displayed some of the best versatility as he excelled on both sides of the ball.
As a pass rusher, his strength was a key factor in his success, while on the offensive line, he had great technique.
When watching AZ Compass Prep this season, it will be hard to miss Cattanach’s presence, as he is in store for a big season.
7v7 Bracket Play
Chaparral vs. Campo Verde
During the quarterfinals, the Chaparral Firebirds and the Campo Verde Coyotes faced off.
The Firebirds would be in control of the contest from the start.
On their opening drive, Chaparral would march down the field and score in a hurry.
The Coyotes, however, would match it.
2027 quarterback Jonah Lubno would get the offense rolling.
Lubno connected with 2027 athlete Tobin Hanson on a quick out route for a touchdown.
The Firebirds would then go on to score 20 unanswered points.
2029 quarterback Ryan Trocki had himself a day, and he continued it during bracket play.
Versus Campo Verde, Trocki threw two touchdown passes and had the Firebirds dominate the entire game.
Late in the game, Lubno was able to throw his second touchdown pass of the game, but the Coyotes were too far out of reach to make a comeback.
Ultimately, Chaparral would win 28-14 and move into the semifinals.
Chaparral vs. St. Mary’s
In the semifinals, the Chaparral Firebirds took on the St. Mary’s Knights.
The matchup saw St. Mary’s 2028 quarterback Luke Horn and Trocki duel it out.
Chaparral started with the ball first, and it immediately saw Trocki fire in his first touchdown pass of the game.
St. Mary’s offense matched the pace.
Horn was able to march his team down the field in their first two drives.
Both times, Horn was able to connect with his tight end in the back of the end zone.
Trocki would also throw another touchdown strike, and the game was close towards the end.
Horn and the Knights kept it close, however, as he threw a 40-yard bomb to St. Mary’s 2027 athlete Billy Lewis for the touchdown.
With only around 3 minutes left in the game, Chaparral led 27-20.
Just like they did multiple times before, though the Knights were able to get a score.
For his fourth touchdown pass of the game, Horn threaded the needle to connect with St. Mary’s 2028 wide receiver Ezekiel Chavez for a 10-yard touchdown.
Down only one point, St. Mary’s opted to go for a two-point conversion to avoid overtime.
The Firebirds' secondary pulled through during the conversion attempt and got the stop.
With the stop, Chaparral won 27-26 and moved into the championship round.
Liberty vs. Chaparral
For the final game of the night, the Liberty Lions took on the Chaparral Firebirds.
Since they were the higher seed, the Lions started with the ball.
2029 quarterback Jason Haines would get things rolling.
Haines found 2027 wide receiver Evan Adamczyk for the first touchdown of the contest.
The Firebirds answered back on their opening drive.
Catching the first touchdown for the Firebirds was 2028 wide receiver Layne Migneault.
After the close start, the Lions were able to get out to a three-possession lead.
Liberty 2027 quarterback Kenny Raymond got in on the action for his team and also completed a touchdown pass.
The next possession for the Lions saw a quarterback-to-quarterback connection.
Haines launched a ball deep to left field that was caught by Raymond for a score.
Capping the game off, Raymond would complete one more touchdown pass and put the game out of reach.
Liberty defeated Chaparral 27-13 and was crowned the 7’s champions of night three at ASU.
Handing the pitchfork trophy to the Lions was alum and current ASU safety Zeth Theus.
Liberty went perfect on the day and continues to prove why they once again will be contenders this season.
