Big Man CompetitionÂ
Six Arizona teams traveled up North to Flagstaff to compete in the NAU big man camp.Â
With a lot of talent at NAU on Saturday, here are some of the players who stood out.Â
Perry 2027 defensive end Jaden Black
For most of the day, Black performed well during the NAU camp.Â
The one-on-one portion saw Black dominate multiple different teams.
His speed off the edge was some of the best at the camp, and he utilized it every rep.Â
Overall, he was great off the edge, providing pressure on almost every rep, and was great during the competition.Â
Mountain Pointe 2027 defensive end Marleigh FelyÂ
Fely showed why he is one of the best defensive players in Arizona on Saturday.Â
Whether it was the tire flip, tug of war, or one-on-one competitions, Fely stood out as one of the best players on the field.Â
He has an arsenal of different moves he uses off the edge, and it helps him get past most offensive linemen.Â
After playing great on the defensive side, he also took reps at right guard and performed well at that position as well.Â
Fely was voted as one of the five best defensive line players after having a great day.
Liberty 2027 offensive lineman Quaid Guiney
Similar to Fely, Guiney had himself a day in every competition that was held at the NAU big man camp.Â
He really showcased his talents during the one-on-ones.Â
His technique and footwork were some of the best at the camp, and he shut down every edge rusher that came his way.Â
Due to his elite play, Guiney was able to help Liberty come in second place for the overall big man competition.Â
Guiney has picked up D-I offers from New Mexico and Eastern Washington this spring/summer.
Mountain View 2028 offensive lineman Alvin Regaldo
This is the second time Regaldo has made a list like this in the last few weeks.
Just like he did at Gotta Believe two weeks ago, he was elite.Â
During the tire flip competition, he displayed his strength, and during one-on-ones, he displayed his discipline and technique.Â
He lined up at guard the whole day, and he was one of, if not the best, interior linemen at NAU on Saturday.Â
Regaldo has been impressive this offseason, and you should expect to see him have a great junior campaign.Â
Chaparral 2027 defensive end Jake Nicholas/Entire Chaparral team
The Chaparral Firebirds took home the hatchet after they won the entire big man competition on Saturday.Â
One of the players who helped lead them to being the first-place team was Nicholas.Â
Nicholas was voted as one of the best five defensive linemen at the camp.Â
He has elite speed and long arms that help him get past offensive linemen consistently.Â
Nicholas was explosive and had one of the better performances on the day.
Overall, the entire Chaparral team performed well as they finished first in the tire flip competition, second in the tug of war competition, and first in points for the entire camp.Â
7v7 Bracket Play
Chaparral vs. Liberty B
While the big men in the trenches took care of business at NAU, the Chaparral Firebirds 7v7 team looked to do the same.Â
In the quarterfinals, Chaparral took on the Liberty Lions B team.Â
For most of the game, Liberty B looked outmatched.Â
A player who played great not only during the game but the entire day was Chaparral 2029 quarterback Ryan Trocki.Â
Trocki has had an exceptional offseason, and that continued Saturday afternoon.Â
Leading his team to multiple touchdowns versus Liberty B, Trocki dominated.Â
Chaparral would go on to win against Liberty B and move into the semifinals, where they would face Perry.Â
Mountain View vs. Liberty AÂ
One of the semifinal matchups saw a 6A duel between the Mountain View Toros and the Liberty Lions.Â
The Lions started with the ball first and took full advantage of it.Â
Liberty 2029 quarterback Jason Haines helped his offense march down the field and capped it off with a touchdown pass.
Haines is competing for the QB1 job this fall, continuing to show why he is one of the best up-and-coming players in the state.Â
With Liberty scoring quickly, Mountain View needed an answer back.
They would do just that as they, too, got down the field in a hurry and capped it off with a touchdown.Â
Mountain View 2028 quarterback Brayden Merwin rolled out to his left to connect with 2027 athlete Kash Skousen for a short touchdown.Â
The Toros then came through on the defensive end to get the ball right back.
Mountain View 2028 defensive back Pace Fischbeck came out of nowhere like a missile to hawk the ball and get the interception for his team.Â
After the interception, the Toros capitalized on the turnover.Â
Merwin threw his second touchdown pass of the game to Mountain View 2028 athlete Skylar Husted in the right corner of the end zone.Â
Mountain View then held a 14-7 lead.Â
For the rest of the contest, neither team could move the ball with purpose, and Mountain View would win the grind-it-out game.
With the 16-7 win over Liberty, Mountain View advanced to the championship game, where they would face Perry.Â
Perry vs. Mountain View
The final two teams standing at the first NAU camp this summer were the Perry Pumas and the Mountain View Toros.Â
Both teams brought the energy to NAU this weekend, and the winner would be crowned the champions of the first camp up North.Â
From the jump, though, Perry looked like an immovable force.Â
The Pumas started with the ball and got into the end zone within a minute.Â
3-star 2027 Boise State QB commit Kael Snyder started the game looking sharp.Â
After helping get his team down the field, Snyder found 2027 wide receiver Jayden Singleton, on a short out route.Â
The Toros looked like they could respond.Â
Mountain View was able to get down the field; however, they left with zero points after Perry had four straight stops near the goal line.Â
From then on, Perry piled on to their lead.Â
Snyder threw his second touchdown pass of the game, this time to 2028 wide receiver Amos Augustine, after he ran an excellent deep route.Â
The Pumas proceeded to go three for three on their drives and take a 20-point lead.Â
Throwing his third touchdown pass of the game, Snyder connected once again with Singleton for a 30-yard touchdown.Â
After their great performances, Singleton won offensive MVP, and Snyder won tournament MVP.Â
Before the game concluded, Mountain View was able to get on the board.Â
Merwin was able to find Mountain View 2027 tight end Sterling Stapley on a quick slant to give the Toros their first touchdown of the game.
While the drive was nice for Mountain View, it was too little too late.Â
Perry would be able to hold on for the last three minutes and win 26-6 over Mountain View in the championship game.Â
The Pumas looked great at NAU and were able to take the hatchet championship trophy back home in Gilbert.Â
