The Chandler Wolves didn’t mess around Thursday night after defeating the Pinnacle Pioneers 40-0 to extend their win streak to eight on the year.
Chandler head coach Ty Wisdom was most proud of how well all three phases of the game, especially special teams, played versus the Pioneers.
“A lot of the teams just go through the motions on special teams,” Wisdom said. “I thought tonight we played in all three phases really well.”
All three phases played phenomenally, and that was shown as Chandler was able to score on offense, defense and special teams to open the game.
On the opening possession for the Wolves, they marched down the field and quickly got into a scoring opportunity.
Getting on the board first, Chandler looked to their signal caller to make a play.
2027 5-Star Oregon QB commit Will Mencl called his own number and made a few defenders miss to get in the end zone from 27 yards out.
Mencl referenced the cover athlete of Madden 2004 on who he felt like when making that play.
“Feeling like Vanilla Vick a little bit,” Mencl said. “Just being able to go out there and make a play first drive meant a lot.”
After striking early, the defense for Chandler would come through with a huge play to round out the first quarter.
Pinnacle moved the ball well down the field as the first quarter came to a close, but the drive suddenly came to an abrupt stop.
Jumping a route perfectly, Chandler 2027 defensive back Marshawn Coleman came away with an interception.
Not only did he get the interception, but he then proceeded to take it back all the way for another Chandler touchdown.
Fast forward to the middle of the second quarter, and it was then the special teams unit for the Wolves that had the best back-to-back plays of the game.
The Pioneers were forced to punt deep in their own territory when Chandler 2027 defensive back Donjerome Mckoy Jr. came screaming off the edge to block the punt.
The blocked punt resulted in a safety, which gave the Wolves another two points.
Then on the following play, Pinnacle had to do a free kick after the safety.
Returning the kick was 3-star Sacramento State WR commit Maxwell Sprott, who maneuvered his way through a sea of Pinnacle defenders to return the kick for a touchdown.
The momentum kept rolling for the Wolves.
Before the end of the first half, Chandler was able to tack on three more points.
Once again, Chandler's offense had another solid drive to get down the field.
Due to some penalty issues, however, the Wolves were forced to kick a field goal.
2027 kicker Ryan Zima drilled a 25-yard field goal to make the score 26-0 heading into halftime.
Coming out of halftime, the Wolves made sure to keep their foot on the gas.
For their opening drive in the second half, Chandler marched right down the field to extend their lead.
Capping off the drive was Mencl finding Sprott on a short pass.
Sprott did the rest himself and made numerous Pinnacle defenders miss and dove his way into the end zone for a 16-yard score.
Sprott said he doesn’t care what anyone says about this team, and they are ready to prove that every week.
“We don’t care about what anybody says,” Sprott said. “We come out and work hard and get what we deserve.”
On the following drive Chandler had, they dominated on the ground and kept finding big chunk plays from a few of their running backs.
2030 running back Bo Jones was able to score a 10-yard rushing touchdown to finish off the drive and put a running clock on Pinnacle.
Once the running clock began, both teams chewed up the rest of the remaining time in the contest.
Chandler took home a 40-0 win on senior night to continue to prove why they are an Open Division contender this season.
Now moving to 8-1 on the season, Chandler finishes off their regular season against Hamilton for a battle for the Arizona Avenue trophy.
Getting a huge win for Pinnacle gives Chandler a lot of momentum next week when they take on their biggest rivals.
“Obviously everybody knows who we have next week,” Mencl said. “Being able to get a statement win like this, on senior night, was huge. It’s a testament to our team.”
Next up: 8-1 Chandler looks to end the regular season on a strong note when they face 7-1 Hamilton. 6-3 Pinnacle looks to add one more win on the year before playoffs when they take on 2-6 Boulder Creek.
