The Chandler Wolves weathered the storm in order to take down the Brophy Broncos 28-13.
While the first half was rocky for the Wolves, Chandler head coach Ty Wisdom was proud of the way his team responded in the second half and how they came away with the win.
“I thought we completely dominated the second half,” Wisdom said. “The score was 28-13. I don't think the score was as close as it really was.”
In the first half, it was a battle of attrition by both teams as neither side could get the ball to move down the field.
Late in the first quarter was the first moment a team finally was able to gain momentum.
Brophy got the ground game going, and it allowed them to put the first points on the board.
Brophy 2028 quarterback Noah Stewart broke loose and ran a whopping 64 yards down the field to set his team up near the goal line.
Only two plays later, 3-star Colgate ATH commit Ryder Noche danced his way in for a 13-yard score.
With one quarter down, Brophy led 6-0.
For the entire first quarter, Chandler was without their Oregon 5-Star QB commit Will Mencl, who was benched.
Wisdom said it was due to a team rule.
For Mencl, it was a moment for him to mature, and he learned a lot from it.
“Having a maturing moment, not fulfilling my team responsibilities this morning,” Mencl said. “So coming in, staying locked in throughout the day on the game plan. Then lighting a fire under us in the second quarter was helpful.”
As soon as Mencl entered the game in the second quarter, the Wolves got it rolling.
On his second drive of the game, Mencl connected with multiple receivers to lead his team down the field.
For a majority of the game, Mencl distributed the wealth, and he said it’s basically unguardable.
“I feel like receiver-wise it’s unguardable to be honest,” Mencl said regarding his wide receiver room. “We have a lot of weapons.”
Capping off the drive, Mencl fired a quick pass over to 2027 athlete Iona Kupa for a 4-yard touchdown.
Heading into halftime, Chandler led 7-6.
At the start of the second half, the Broncos quickly took back the lead.
Scoring his second rushing touchdown of the game, Noche broke free on 4th down and scored from 66 yards out.
Brophy held a 13-7 lead and had a lot of the momentum shift their way.
The Wolves didn’t let the longest touchdown of the night affect them too much, though, as they started to put together multiple scoring drives.
Halfway through the third quarter, Chandler once again relied on their star quarterback to lead them.
After getting them down deep into Brophy territory, Mencl called his own number and scampered to the outside for an 11-yard touchdown.
Early in the fourth quarter, Chandler once again got the ball into scoring range and stayed aggressive.
On 4th and goal, Chandler decided to go for it.
The attempt ended up failing, though, as 2029 defensive back Mason Alexander came through with back-to-back tackles for loss to abruptly end the drive.
Chandler’s defense was able to hold strong, though, and force a quick three-and-out.
After forcing the punt, the ball took a weird bounce, and it ended up only being an 18-yard punt that set up Chandler on Bophy’s 20-yard line.
A few plays later, Chandler handed the ball off to 2027 running back Ty Strozier, who ran in a 15-yard touchdown.
From that moment on, the game was all Chandler.
They scored one more time in the game as Chandler's 2028 running back David Douglas scampered in for a 5-yard touchdown.
Then the cherry on top came late in the game when Chandler 2027 defensive back Austin Reese blocked and recovered a punt.
One knee later, the offense scored, and Chandler would leave with a 28-13 victory.
Even though Chandler is sitting at 4-1 on the season, they know they have to get better as they head into the second half of their schedule.
“We gotta continue to get better,” Wisdom said when asked about playing Cactus Canyon next week and then having the bye week after. “It’s two weeks where I have to be careful what we do, body recovery, but also getting better.”
Next up: 4-1 Chandler looks to keep their winning streak alive when they take on 0-4 Cactus Canyon. 3-2 Brophy looks to get back in the win column when they face 3-1 Shadow Ridge.
