The Gilbert Tigers defeated the Corona del Sol Aztecs 27-7 on Thursday night, using a strong offensive performance to pull away in the second half.

Gilbert entered the matchup looking to continue its strong start to the 2026 girls flag football season, while Corona del Sol looked to defend its home field and continue their undefeated streak to 5.

The Tigers started hot after Gilbert senior athlete Jasmine Guerrero picked off the Aztecs and returned the interception all the way inside the 5-yard line.

Gilbert quickly capitalized on the turnover, and the Tigers found the end zone shortly after to take a 7-0 lead.

Gilbert senior quarterback Lilah Barton escaped the pocket to find Gilbert junior athlete Jaylin Guerrero in the back of the end zone.

Corona del Sol struggled to find an answer on its opening possessions as Gilbert’s defense continued to pressure the Aztecs and keep them from moving the ball downfield.

The Tigers continued to build on their early momentum.

After the Aztecs started to drive down the field, Jaylin Guerrero came up with an interception on an overthrown ball.

The interception allowed Gilbert to try and extend its lead by more than one possession.

However, Corona del Sol’s defense responded with an interception of their own.

Corona del Sol junior athlete Sofia Villone came up with the contested catch with under a minute left in the quarter.

In the beginning of the second quarter, the Aztecs were held to a quick punt.

However, the Aztecs quickly responded with another interception by Corona del Sol senior athlete Cynthia Roberts.

Corona del Sol’s offense began to find more success driving the ball down the field, putting more pressure on Gilbert’s defense.

The Aztecs continued to battle, but Gilbert’s defense held strong and prevented Corona del Sol from putting points on the board.

Gilbert senior athlete Raegan Rogers made the big interception to stop the Aztecs.

Shortly after, Corona del Sol added another interception.

Corona del Sol senior athlete Aaliyah Van Heel came up with the turnover with just under four minutes remaining in the half.

The Tigers' defense continued to prevent the Aztecs from scoring.

Jaylin Guerrero came up with her second interception of the night to end another Corona del Sol possession.

With both defenses continuing to make plays, neither team was able to score a touchdown during the second quarter.

However, Gilbert junior kicker Allison Bogle knocked down the field goal to extend the Tigers' lead to 10-0 entering halftime.

Corona del Sol entered the second half looking to cut into the deficit, yet Gilbert continued to control the game defensively.

After the Aztecs forced the Tigers to punt the ball, the Aztecs looked to capitalize on their momentum.

Gilbert freshman athlete Brooklyn Travis picked off the quick pass for the Tigers and returned it 74 yards to the end zone.

The Tigers then led 17-0.

Gilbert entered the fourth quarter with a 20-0 lead, after Bogle made her second field-goal attempt of the night with less than 30 seconds remaining in the quarter.

The Aztecs continued to battle despite the deficit, and even made a few quarterback changes.

However, Gilbert’s defense continued to make it difficult time and time again after coming up with another interception.

Gilbert senior athlete Janeah Huynh came up with the big play and returned it for a pick-six.

The pick-six extended the Tigers' lead to 27-0.

The Aztecs finally broke through midway into the fourth quarter.

Corona del Sol junior athlete Amyah Anderson picked off the Tigers and took it all the way to the end zone for the Aztecs' first points of the night.

When the Tigers gained possession, they ran the clock down and continued to control the game as the final minutes ticked away.

Corona del Sol attempted to create another opportunity late in the fourth quarter, but Gilbert’s defense continued to manage and prevent the Aztecs from putting more points on the scoreboard, finishing the game with a score of 27-7.

“Today was great because we wanted to make sure that our girls were ready to play, and that they knew that they belonged at the top, and they came in and executed and listened to what we talked about,” Gilbert assistant coach Brian Winstead mentioned following the game.

Next up: 2-1 Gilbert looks to extend their winning streak when they take on 0-2 Skyline. Corona del Sol looks to get back in the win column when they face 1-2 Mountain Pointe.
