Hamilton Holds Off Gilbert 17-14 to Extend Win Streak to 39 Games

The Hamilton Huskies opened their 2026 girls flag football season with a 17-14 victory over the Gilbert Tigers on Tuesday night.

The Huskies entered the matchup looking to improve their 38-game winning streak,

while the Tigers looked to hand Hamilton its first loss since 2023.

The first quarter belonged to the defenses, as neither team found the end zone during

the opening 12 minutes.

The score remained tied at 0-0 heading into the second quarter.

However, Hamilton 2029 quarterback/safety Athena Vasquez connected with sophomore

athlete Romaya Farrington for a 25-yard gain, leaving the Huskies in the red zone.

Hamilton finished the job in the second quarter, when senior kicker/running back Laela

Johnson converted a field goal to put the Huskies ahead 3-0.

The field goal opened the door for Hamilton’s offense, as head coach Matt Stone began

to find more opportunities for his offense.

After stopping the Tigers again, Vasquez and the Huskies continued their momentum.

Sophomore athlete Harmony Cosby was able to catch a jump ball over the middle and outran the rest of the defense for a long touchdown.

The Huskies increased their lead to 10.

Hamilton’s defense continued to keep Gilbert off the scoreboard, giving the Huskies

another opportunity to extend their lead before halftime.

The Huskies took advantage of their last drive, driving down the field quickly and

scoring a touchdown with just 18 seconds left. 

Vasquez found senior Markiah Riley over the middle for a 19-yard touchdown.

The Huskies took a 17-0 lead heading into halftime after putting together a strong

second quarter.

Gilbert came out of halftime with a different level of energy, quickly putting pressure on

the Hamilton defense. 

Senior quarterback Lilah Barton was finding her rhythm after connecting with the freshman athlete Brooklyn Travis to get inside the 15.

Gilbert was able to strike first in the second half.

Barton juked out the rusher and dove into the end zone for a 3-yard touchdown, closing the deficit to 17-7.

After the touchdown, the atmosphere inside the stadium began to change.

The crowd grew louder with each defensive stop and offensive opportunity for the Tigers, creating a noticeably different environment than the first half.

Hamilton attempted to respond on its next possession, but Gilbert’s defense continued

to prevail, forcing a turnover for the Huskies.

With the momentum beginning to shift, the Tigers continued to look for opportunities in

entering the fourth quarter.

Barton led Gilbert down the field, moving the Tigers into prime position to make the

game even closer.

However, Barton was pressured and threw an interception to Farrington, ending the drive short.

The interception gave Hamilton another opportunity to not only create more separation

but also drain a lot of time off the scoreboard.

Nonetheless, the Tigers continued to keep the Huskies from extending their lead.

With Hamilton still holding a 17-7 lead, Gilbert needed to score quickly.

Travis brought in an incredible one-handed grab after bobbling the ball multiple times, leading to a huge gain for the Tigers.

The big play put Gilbert in position to continue its comeback attempt. 

Barton and the Tigers continued to move the ball down the field, putting more pressure on Hamilton’s defense.

With just over four minutes left in the game, Barton pitched the ball backwards to junior

athlete Jaylin Guerrero, who then passed it to junior athlete Lola Seger in the back of the

end zone for a touchdown.

Gilbert cut Hamilton’s lead to 17-14, bringing the Tigers within three points with only four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter.

The momentum that Hamilton built in the second quarter had completely shifted, and the stadium grew louder.

Gilbert’s defense responded by forcing a three-and-out on Hamilton’s next possession,

giving the Tigers one final opportunity to complete the comeback.

With the game still separated by three points, Gilbert struggled to move down the field

and was unable to convert.

Hamilton’s defense came up with another crucial stop after Vasquez intercepted the

Tigers and continued with a long return.

“Our team executed everything on the field that we were practicing,” Vasquez

mentioned. “Even in the toughest situations, we came together and worked through it.”

With the clock winding down, Hamilton knelt out the remaining time to secure the 17-14

victory.

The victory extended Hamilton’s winning streak to 39 games and moved the Huskies to

1-0 on the season.

“As far as I’m concerned, the win streak is at one. I don’t give a darn about seasons

past,” coach Stone replied. “This team has won one game; those past teams are great, and we celebrate them, but this is 2026, and we're starting something brand new.”

Next up: 1-0 Hamilton looks to keep it rolling when they take on 0-1 Canyon View. 0-1 Gilbert looks to get in the win column when they face 0-1 South Mountain.
