Casa Grande Blanks ACP for 2nd Straight Shutout to Open Season

The Casa Grande Cougars dominated ACP 36-0 on Tuesday to improve to 2-0 on the year.

When you have a team as talented as Casa Grande, it can be hard to find ways to not be content throughout the year.

Even after a great win, Head Coach Alistair Mountz preached to his team not to get complacent and to stay hungry throughout the year.

“Any team that has a lot of talent and expectations, it’s always something you’re trying to work out, “ Alistair Mountz said. “We’re just going to keep preaching it. Hopefully we stay hungry the whole season.”

That motto of not staying content showed throughout the game as, from start to finish, the Cougars took command of the game and didn’t look.

On their opening drive, Casa Grande scored in a hurry.

Kicking things off, 2027 quarterback launched a deep ball to 2027 athlete Kayla Tacker for a 30-yard touchdown.

The two would then connect for a successful two-point conversion.

On the defensive side, the Cougars forced multiple punts and really never allowed the Knights to gain any momentum on offense.

Late in the first quarter, the Cougars extended their lead.

Mountz tossed her second touchdown pass of the night to 2030 wide receiver Avery Murray for an 18-yard score.

With one quarter down, Casa Grande led 15-0.

For a majority of the second quarter, the clock was burned, and Casa Grande was only able to put together one more scoring drive in the half.

After marching down the field, Mountz threaded the needle to hit 2027 athlete Lynisee Armstrong for an 8-yard touchdown.

Last season, Armstrong missed the entire season due to a knee injury, but the entire Casa Grande team is more than happy she is back.

It’s not just the presence on the field she brings back, but off the field as well.

“She brings a light to everything we do,” Alistair Mountz said. “To me personally that’s the most meaningful part of having her back.”

With only a few minutes left in the first half, ACP put together their best offensive drive of the contest.

It was led by 2029 quarterback Regan Nickle, who connected with multiple receivers to get into the Cougars' territory.

The drive was cut short, though, as 2027 rusher Dillan Herrington got a crucial sack to essentially end the drive.

At halftime, Casa Grande led 22-0.

In the second half, it was much the same as the Cougars continued to flourish on both sides of the ball.

Early in the third quarter, 2027 linebacker Rhiyanna Monreal snagged an interception and set her team up with great field position.

Capitalizing on the turnover, the Cougars scored fast.

For her fourth touchdown pass of the game, Mountz pump-faked right and then looked left to find Armstrong for a 40-yard touchdown.

In the final minutes of the third quarter, Casa Grande added one more score.

The final score of the game saw Mountz connect once more with Tacker, this time for a 10-yard touchdown.

Overall, the offense for Casa Grande has been elite.

Tacker says the trio they have on offense between herself, Mountz and Armstrong is what has been clicking the most so far this year.

“We’re all talented in our own ways; when they stop one, we have another,” Tacker said. “We’re ready for whatever comes our way.”

Casa Grande burned the rest of the time in the fourth quarter and went back home with a 36-0 win over ACP.

Opening up the season, Casa Grande had to go on the road twice, but now, this upcoming Thursday, the Cougars get to defend their home turf for the first time this season.

It also happens to be against Vista Grande, which is a rival game that only adds to the excitement for the team.

The Cougars are ready to keep it rolling for their next game.

“We’ve gone away from home and beat people on their field,” Sarah Mountz said. “Now we get to go home. This is our field; we can’t let anybody take us.”

Next up: 2-0 Casa Grande will look to keep their win streak alive when they face 0-2 rival Vista Grande. 1-2 ACP looks to get back in the win column when they take on 2-0 Cactus Shadows.
