Saturday at Flagstaff saw storms roll in and out, which forced NAU to delay their camps due to the surrounding lightning.
Due to the delay, unfortunately, there is no 7’s coverage from this tournament from us.
On the bright side, the big man competition was a great watch.
Here are the players/teams that stood out during the big man competition at NAU.
Big Man Competition
Cactus Shadows 2027 defensive lineman Jack Yost
Yost is coming off a solid 2025 season and has looked to build towards a strong senior campaign during the offseason.
During the camp, he displayed his speed and how great a speed rusher he is.
Also, the one-on-one portion saw Yost use different combinations of moves to get past his opponents.
He was relentless in getting to the ball, and in return, it led to one of the best days at the NAU camp.
Overall, Yost was great during the camp, and it is expected that he will take off this season.
Mica Mountain 2027 offensive/defensive lineman Juan Martinez
Martinez was one of a few players from Mica Mountain who had an exceptional day.
On both sides of the ball, Martinez performed.
When he was rushing the passer, Martinez used his pure strength and hand placement to dominate the offensive lineman in front of him.
While he was playing on offense, his discipline and reaction time were some of the best.
He won a majority of his one-on-one drills at NAU.
Martinez was a bright spot at the camp, and he is a part of a special Mica Mountain lineman group.
Mica Mountain 2029 defensive lineman Roman Leon
Roman Leon is the younger brother of a Mica Mountain alum, Jimmy Leon, who now plays at UTEP.
The resemblance on the field between the two was uncanny.
Roman showed off at NAU on Saturday during every drill.
When he pass rushed during the one-on-one portion, his mix of strength and arm work was impressive.
He could either get past the offensive lineman or chop their hands to break free to the quarterback.
Even though he is only a 2029, Leon has a lot of strength that he was able to use to simply move other linemen.
Leon will be called upon to have more responsibility this season, and he seems up to the challenge.
Mica Mountain 2028 offensive/defensive lineman Lincoln Maggard
Maggard is not only one of the most intimidating players at 4A, but the whole state of Arizona too.
He stands at a 6’7 285-pound frame and uses every bit of his size to his advantage.
When he was on offense, Maggard was able to pancake multiple defenders or push them past the line of scrimmage.
Then, on the defensive side, his pure strength and height were too much for opposing teams to deal with.
Maggard dominated every rep, while mixing up his moves and keeping opposing players guessing every time he lined up.
While a lot of players can be good at both sides of the ball, Maggard is dominant on both sides.
His versatility, mixed with his size and athleticism, makes him one of the more intriguing 2028 prospects.
Basha 2028 defensive lineman Landen Wade/Entire Basha team
By now, most people know the name of the five-star recruit at Basha.
Wade has proven over the last few weeks that he has taken a jump in his game.
He is one of the most talented players in the country, and he displayed that at the NAU big man camp.
During one-on-ones, not many players could keep up with him or his speed in getting to the ball.
Wade also helped his team get overall points after he was a big help during the tug of war and tire flip challenges.
The last drill of the day, he helped Basha win it all.
It was a one-on-one against Higley.
The challenge saw each player bear crawl with a cone on their backs, and the team that had their cone on last would be crowned the winners.
Wade came through for his team and won the challenge.
In general, every player on Basha did a great job, which is why they won the trophy at NAU.
