The Cactus Canyon Champions picked up a 20-0 win over the Tolleson Wolverines on Monday.
The defense for the Champions was elite, and they allowed their offense to get great scoring field position a plethora of times in the contest.
In the first half alone, Cactus Canyon came away with four interceptions.
On their first defensive drive of the game, 2029 athlete Nehemiah Gary made a leaping catch to get an interception.
A few plays later, the Champions struck first.
The Champions faced a fourth-and-goal situation and relied on their signal caller to get them in the end zone.
2029 quarterback Kailah Scott called her own number and ran down the sideline to score a 5-yard rushing touchdown.
The defensive masterclass for the Champions continued as they came away with another interception not long after scoring the touchdown.
2029 defensive back Ja’miyah Jones jumped a route perfectly to get the interception.
For the Champions this time around, they would not capitalize on the turnover after Tolleson forced a turnover on downs.
On fourth and goal, 2029 rusher Kamaury Patino got to the quarterback and tallied the sack to prevent the Champions from extending their lead.
Unfortunately for the Wolverines, though, they could not feed off the momentum and once again turned the ball over.
Late in the first half, 2027 athlete Malia Woodberry climbed the ladder to snag an impressive interception and once again get the ball back to the Champions' offense.
After making the remarkable play on defense, Woodberry would also make her presence felt on the offensive side.
With a minute to go in the first half, Scott fired a quick pass over to Woodberry, who made a diving catch for the 3-yard touchdown.
Given that Tolleson and Cactus Canyon are both atop the 6A Metro region, Woodberry said she had to make the catch as it could eventually be what helps win them the region.
“I was like, dang, I really got to hold on to this,” Woodberry said. “This is probably for the region championship.”
Wrapping up the first 24 minutes of the game, it was once again the defensive unit that created another takeaway for the Champions.
2027 defensive back Charidon James was the one to come down with the interception and prevent Tolleson from getting on the board before halftime.
Heading into the second half, Cactus Canyon led 13-0.
The second half proved to be similar to the first as Cactus Canyon kept applying the pressure defensively to get a few more interceptions.
For the second time in the game, James was able to get an interception and set her offense up with great field positon.
The Champions took advantage of the turnover and extended their lead in the fourth quarter.
Connecting for a second score of the game, on fourth and goal, Scott flipped a pass over to Woodberry, who came down with the catch for a 1-yard touchdown.
Finally capping off the game, Cactus Canyon got their sixth and final interception of the contest.
Getting her second interception of the night was Gary, which ultimately prevented any late comeback attempts by Tolleson.
In the first seven drives of the game, Cactus Canyon had a video-game-like six interceptions.
The elite performance by the entire unit is what helped them go home with a commanding 20-0 victory.
Now moving to 8-2 on the season, the Champions control their own destiny in terms of winning their region.
That, paired with wanting to get into the postseason, Cactus Canyon is ready to lock in the rest of the way.
“Just lock in, try to get that playoff position,” Woodberry said. “16th place is where we gotta be. Bring our all and get there.”
Next up: 8-2 Cactus Canyon looks to continue to stack wins in region play when they face 3-6 West Point. 6-5 Tolleson looks to get back in the win column when they face 3-6 Trevor G. Browne.
