QUEEN CREEK, Ariz. – O’Connor was able to score in every quarter and kept Crismon off the scoreboard all night, cruising to a 28-0 victory.
The Eagles entered the game with a 4-2 record and added another win after a balanced performance on both sides of the ball.
O’Connor scored seven points in each quarter, building a lead early before continuing to pull away throughout the second half.
Crismon entered the matchup with a 3-1 record, and their offensive struggles led to the Rattlers going scoreless in all four quarters and giving the Eagles their second shutout of the season.
The Eagles took control from the opening quarter, as they started with the ball and took their time draining almost half of the first quarter.
Sophomore athlete Eva Herrera immediately came up with a deep grab for about 40 yards to put the Eagles in great field position.
The Eagles were able to finish the drive with points after Herrera was found over the middle late into the play and extended her arm out for a touchdown.
The extra point extended the Eagles' lead to 7-0 about halfway through the first quarter.
On the next drive, Crismon was able to drive down the field after freshman athlete Jaedyn Valdez came up with a great catch over the middle.
The ball was set up right before the 20-yard line as the first quarter came to an end.
The Rattlers’ drive gave them an opportunity to respond, but O’Connor’s defense prevented Crismon from turning the possession into points.
The Eagles took over and continued to control the pace of the game as senior quarterback Kylie Pruitt found senior center Ally McCall for a long gain early into the drive.
However, Crismon would not let them finish the drive and took possession back.
On the punt return, sophomore athlete Reylynn Lazarin found space and returned it all the way to the 50-yard line.
The punt gave the Rattlers great field position to start the drive.
The Rattlers were unable to capitalize on the return, as the O’Connor defense stayed strong.
O’Connor regained possession and quickly looked to add to its lead before halftime.
With about two minutes remaining, Pruitt connected with freshman athlete Charlie McTheny on a deep ball to put the Eagles inside the 50-yard line.
However, the Rattlers stood their ground, taking the ball back late in the second quarter.
Quickly after the stop, McTheny picked off Crismon, taking the ball right back with only a minute to go in the half.
“I see how good we are now; I can continue to lead for the incoming high schoolers coming on, and it's really exciting,” McTheny mentioned following the game.
Opening up the drive, Pruitt connected with Herrera down the sideline to put the Eagles inside the Rattlers' 10-yard line.
With less than 15 seconds remaining, Pruitt threw the quick pass to McTheny for a touchdown and put the Eagles up 14-0 entering halftime.
O’Connor carried its momentum into the second half, with the defense continuing to prevent Crismon from finding an answer offensively.
The Rattlers attempted to create scoring drives coming out of halftime, but O’Connor continued to make stops and did not let off the gas.
Late into the third quarter, the Eagles were able to add another touchdown with less than two minutes remaining.
Making another great play was McTheny, who came up with a deep grab to put the Eagles near midfield.
Finishing the drive, Pruitt connected with Herrera on a deep pass down the sideline leading all the way into the end zone.
The touchdown gave the Eagles a 21-0 lead.
As Crismon took over, Lazarin on the first play caught a deep ball all the way inside the 20-yard line.
Crismon continued to battle, but the Rattlers were unable to find the end zone as O’Connor’s defense remained in control entering the fourth quarter.
Early in the fourth quarter, the Eagles added their fourth touchdown of the night.
Pruitt hit McTheny on a quick slant that led into a deep touchdown, giving the Eagles a 28-0 lead.
Crismon was unable to respond during the remainder of the game, as O’Connor completed the shutout and secured the road victory.
The victory improved the Eagles to 5-2 on the season as they prepare for a home game against the Casteel Colts.
O’Connor head coach Robert Latona said his team played very well, but they still have some things to clean up going forward.
“Cleaned up some mistakes that we needed to clean up, and we still have to clean some more up,” Latona said. “Overall great effort from everyone.”
Next up: 5-2 O’Connor looks to add to their win streak when they face 3-1 Casteel. 3-2 Crismon looks to get back in the win column when they take on 2-3 Barry Goldwater.
