Notre Dame Prep Pulls Away from Chaparral to Improve to 6-1
The Notre Dame Prep Saints defeated the Chaparral Firebirds 34-14 to continue their four-game winning streak.
After losing to Desert Edge earlier in the year, the Saints have put together a nice win streak and have been rolling ever since.
NDP head coach George Prelock says they have been just focused on taking it day by day.
“We’re not worried about anything except the next day,” Prelock said. “It starts with tomorrow.”
Kicking off the game, the Firebirds got off to a quick start.
Less than two minutes into the game, Chaparral put points on the board first.
In one of the first few plays of the game, 2029 quarterback Ryan Trocki threw a deep bomb down the right sideline to 2027 wide receiver Jahir Jensen for a 62-yard touchdown.
For the Saints, their opening drive didn’t go as smoothly.
Feeding off the energy the offense set at the beginning of the game, the Firebirds defense came away with a takeaway.
Chaparral 2027 defensive back Luca Ugenti snagged an interception to give his offense the ball right back.
The defense for the Saints would come through,gh however, and force Chaparral to punt.
Late in the first quarter, NDP put together a great drive to march down the field.
The drive relied mostly on 2027 running back Decker Haskins-Smith, who pummelled his way through defenders to keep moving the chains.
Capping off the drive for NDP was 2027 quarterback Hunter Stine, who called his own number to score a 4-yard rushing touchdown.
With one quarter down, the game was tied 7-7.
For a majority of the second quarter, the Saints dominated.
Five minutes into the quarter, 2027 defensive back Matt Higby came away with an interception to give his offense a chance to take their first lead of the contest.
The Saints did just that.
In what was one of the best plays of the night, Haskins-Smith scampered in for a 33-yard touchdown after he made multiple defenders miss and refused to go down.
Momentum kept favoring the Saints as the defense came away with another interception.
2028 defensive back Austin Bush jumped a route perfectly to come away with theSaints's second interception of the quarter.
Similar to the drive before, NDP relied on their star running back.
Scoring his second rushing touchdown of the night, Haskins-Smith ran for a 10-yard touchdown.
Prelock said not only is Decker a special player, but the offensive line for the Saints is the true difference maker.
“Decker is a special kid,” Prelock said. “The only reason he can do that is that our front five is really good. Decker will be the first to tell you all the praise goes to them.”
NDP scored 21 unanswered points to take a 21-7 lead.
Before halftime, though, the Firebirds put together one more scoring drive to cut into the lead.
With less than a minute left in the first half, Trocki lofted a pass to 2028 wide receiver Layne Migneault for a 30-yard score.
Heading into halftime, the Saints led 21-14.
For the entire second half, the game belonged to NDP.
The third quarter went by in a hurry, however, and neither team was able to sustain any drives.
Early in the fourth quarter, though, the Saints started to pull away.
In what was his third and final rushing touchdown of the game, Haskins-Smith broke free for his longest run of the night that was a huge 50-yard touchdown.
NDP’s following drive, they once again found the end zone and were able to seal the victory.
Stine connected with 2027 wide receiver Jace Wright for a big completion.
After hauling in the catch, Wright did the rest himself and scored a 45-yard touchdown.
The touchdown would stamp a massive 20-point win for the Saints.
NDP is on a roll right now as they move to 6-1 on the season and now 2-0 in region play.
For NDP, it doesn’t matter what situation they face along the way; they are going to give it their all every single week.
“We’re going to come out here no matter what,” Haskins-Smith said. “We could be 10-0, we could be 0-10. We’re going to come out here and give the same effort each week.”
Next up: 6-1 Notre Dame Prep looks to continue their win streak when they face 2-5 Cactus Shadows. 4-2 Chaparral looks to get back in the win column when they face 5-1 Desert Mountain.
