GOODYEAR, Ariz. – Desert Edge held off a last push from Canyon View on Friday night, securing a 21-17 victory after the Jaguars threatened to take the lead in the final minutes.

The game remained close throughout the first half, with both defenses making key plays to keep the opposing offenses from finding the end zone.

The first quarter started slow, with both teams trading possessions and struggling to create consistent offensive momentum early.

Neither team was able to put any points on the board until the final minute of the quarter, when Desert Edge broke through with the first touchdown of the night.

Senior quarterback Blake Roskopf connected with junior wide receiver Jhaheem Brown down the sideline to end the first quarter with a 7-0 lead.

Desert Edge’s momentum continued, after the Scorpions came up with another stop against the Jaguars.

On the Scorpion’s offensive drive, Desert Edge extended its lead when senior athlete Nate Jones bulldozed his way into the end zone with just under 10 minutes remaining in the second quarter.

After completing the PAT, the Scorpions led 14-0.

Canyon View was able to make some progression on their next drive after a long kick return crossing the 50-yard line.

The Jaguars moved the ball into scoring range before settling for a field goal. Senior kicker/punter Austin Honsa put it through the uprights, cutting the deficit to 14-3 with just under eight minutes remaining in the half.

Desert Edge looked to add to its lead on the following drive, with junior running back Byron Brandon taking a carry all the way to the 22-yard line.

However, the Jaguars were able to recover a fumble after a bad snap with four minutes remaining in the second quarter.

Canyon View quickly moved into Desert Edge’s territory, reaching inside the Scorpions’ 50-yard line with just under two minutes remaining.

Even though Desert Edge defense responded and forced a punt, they muffed the punt inside of the redzone to set the Jaguar offense back up in prime real estate.

With just under a minute remaining, Canyon View’s senior quarterback Titan Jacobs found Braylon Anderson 17 yards out on a crosser for a touchdown.

After the PAT, the Jaguars cut the deficit even more going into halftime with a score of 14-10.

Canyon View received the opening kickoff but was unable to find a rhythm, going three-and-out and punting the ball back to the Scorpions.

The Scorpions also struggled to move the ball on their opening possession, as the Jaguars forced a punt in return with around eight minutes to go in the third quarter.

Canyon View took over and this time made some progress into the Scorpions territory, but still were eventually held, giving the ball back to Desert Edge once again.

Desert Edge again struggled to sustain its drive after multiple penalties and punted with just under five minutes remaining in the quarter.

The cycle repeated itself for the remainder of the quarter, with both teams struggling to keep their drives alive as the game remained 14-10 heading into the fourth.

Canyon View’s offense started to brew in the fourth quarter, as the Jaguars continued their drive from the final minutes of the third.

The Jaguars moved the ball deep into Desert Edge territory, eventually reaching the Scorpions’ 10-yard line on a lengthy drive after multiple receptions by Anderson.

Despite the drive's success, Desert Edge’s defense held its ground and forced Canyon View to turn the ball over on downs after failing on fourth down.

The Scorpions took over at their own 10-yard line, but quickly gave the ball back to the Jaguars after senior linebacker Trey Jones intercepted a pass inside the Desert Edge 20-yard line.

Canyon View capitalized on the turnover with just eight minutes remaining after Jacobs maneuvered his way around the defense for a 22-yard rushing touchdown on a crucial fourth down.

The successful PAT gave the Jaguars their first lead of the night, 17-14.

Desert Edge responded with a drive of their own, moving the ball across midfield quickly after Jones took over for a hefty run.

The Scorpions continued to push into the red zone, eventually reaching the Canyon View 5-yard line.

On third down, Jones finished the drive with a tough 5-yard rushing touchdown to put Desert Edge back in front 21-17.

Canyon View received the kickoff with about four minutes remaining and began its final attempt to regain the lead.

The Jaguars moved steadily downfield, converting on third down a lot and eventually made their way inside the 50-yard line after a great contested catch by senior wide receiver Jay'mari Hector.

After another crucial catch by Anderson, Canyon View eventually found themselves on the Desert Edge 17-yard line and faced a critical fourth-down situation.

Desert Edge’s defense held once again, as freshman defensive back Nehemiah Greer came up with a big deflection forcing a turnover on downs with 10 seconds remaining.

Desert Edge ran out the clock to secure the 21-17 victory over the undefeated Jaguars.

“We found a way to win, and a way to move on to the next play and the next snap even with adversity,” Desert Edge head coach Henri MacArthur mentioned following the game. “Winning is what we expect, we need to move on to next week and we have a lot to clean up.”

Next up: The Scorpions prepare to travel to Verrado High School for their next matchup, while the Jaguars look to redeem themselves next week at home against Raymond S. Kellis.
