The Eastmark Firebirds convincingly defeated their rival Crismon Rattlers 35-3 on Tuesday night.
Since dropping to Marana in the first game of the season, Eastmark has been rolling.
Eastmark head coach Nick Garces credits his defense with much of that success.
“They’ve really bought into the scheme,” Garces said. “They trust what we’re doing here. They’re a very close group to this defense.”
From start to finish, Eastmark's defense and offense were lights out.
In their first offensive play of the game, Eastmark blew the doors wide open.
2027 quarterback Paige McCrabb launched a perfect pass to 2030 athlete Paige Lunt for a 50-yard score to put the Firebirds up on the board first.
The momentum only continued to grow as, on the defensive side, Eastmark was able to get their first takeaway of the night.
Making a remarkable catch for an interception was Eastmark 2028 linebacker Savanna Holm.
After making the big interception, Holm set her offense up with great field position.
The Firebirds capitalized quickly off the interception.
McCrabb threw her second touchdown of the game while on the move, and she found 2027 athlete Mikaela Oberstein for a 15-yard touchdown.
In only three offensive plays, Eastmark scored two touchdowns.
Early in the second quarter, the Firebirds kept finding their stride and adding to their lead.
For her third passing touchdown of the contest, McCrabb threw a dime to 2030 wide receiver Collins Middaugh for a 15-yard touchdown.
After trailing early on, the Rattlers would put up their first points of the game late in the first half.
On a crucial fourth down, Crismon 2030 quarterback Bostyn Pack used her legs to move the chains and keep the drive alive.
Eventually, Crismon’s drive would slow down, and they had to settle for a field goal.
2027 kicker Kaiya Smith drilled a 29-yard field goal to put the Rattlers on the board.
Even though they led by a good margin, the Firebirds didn’t let their foot off the gas before the first half concluded.
On the first play of the drive, McCrabb found Oberstein for a huge 80-yard catch-and-run to set the offense up near the goal line.
A few plays later, the duo of McCrabb and Oberstein connected once more for a 10-yard score.
At halftime, Eastmark held a 28-3 lead.
For a majority of the third quarter, neither offense could find any rhythm.
In fact, both defenses came away with takeaways during the quarter.
With five minutes left in the third quarter, 2028 athlete Sophia Saldivar came out of nowhere to snag an interception.
It only took a few plays for the Firebirds to get the ball right back.
2028 linebacker Gabriella Gomez read a play perfectly to come up with an interception of her own.
After the back-and-forth takeaways, neither offense could get back on the board.
The final touchdown of the game came midway through the fourth quarter to ice the game.
For the fifth and final time of the game, McCrabb threw a passing touchdown that was once again caught by Middaugh.
Eastmark would defend home turf and come away with a huge win to put them at 5-1 at the halfway mark of the season.
Since their loss to 6A Marana in their first game of the season, Eastmark has a point differential of +142 and five straight victories.
Since AIA has been a sanctioned sport, Eastmark has been at the top as one of the best programs in Arizona.
They have yet to win a state championship, but each season they inch closer to that goal.
For the entire team, they know they have something to show.
“We have something to show this year,” McCrabb said. “We have something to finish.”
Next up: 5-1 Eastmark looks to keep it rolling when they take on 7-0 ALA Gilbert North. 4-3 Crismon looks to get back in the win column when they face 1-5 Tempe.
