#7 Gilbert Christian Dominates #6 Seton Catholic to Remain Undefeated

On Friday night, Gilbert Christian took down Seton Catholic 41-18 in a top 3A showdown.

It was a one-sided showdown as Seton Catholic couldn’t seem to get out of its own way, while on the other side, Gilbert Christian made the most of every opportunity.

The Gilbert Christian momentum started when the Knights got great field positioning after a short punt by Seton Catholic. Senior quarterback Caleb Ely then connected with senior wide receiver Kamari Stanbury for a 22-yard Knight touchdown.

It didn’t take long for Gilbert Christian to get the ball back, and once again, they marched down the field. This time, it was junior running back Camden Gorsline who ran it up the middle for a 3-yard touchdown to extend their lead to 13-0 at the end of the first quarter.

Seton Catholic did respond this time with a scoring drive of their own. After a great kick return, the Sentinels were set up in Gilbert Christian’s territory. A few plays later, junior quarterback Patrick Connelly found senior wide receiver RJ Fogerty, who tip-toed his way into the endzone for a 25-yard touchdown.

After letting Seton Catholic score a touchdown, Gilbert Christian went all gas, no brakes.

They went down the field instantly, and they scored a long touchdown as Ely found junior wide receiver Malachi Ahlman on a 55-yard bomb.

Next possession, Gilbert christian senior linebacker Hyatt Lang forced a Seton Catholic fumble.

Lang and the Knights had a clear game plan against Seton Catholic.

“We're expecting the inside run a lot because they were showing it really well against Round Valley,” Lang said. “That was our original game plan.”

The scoring barrage continued for Gilbert Christian as Ely connected with Stanbury for a second time of the night, this time for a 52-yard touchdown. Then, to close out the half, Ely kept it himself and scampered into the endzone for a 5-yard touchdown.

They led 34-6 at halftime, and Ely was proud of how his team didn’t let up.

“The main thing was to come out hard and never really let the foot off the gas,” Ely said. “Just had to trust my guys to make plays.”

The first half was some of, if not the best, football Gilbert Christian has played so far this season. Head coach John Carlson was proud of how his team did in the first half.

“I was proud of how fast we came out in the first half,” Carlson said. “We scored on all of our drives, and they were touchdowns.”

To begin the second half, Gilbert Christian’s momentum continued.

They once again drove down the field after Gorsline had a 26-yard run that would eventually set up a 21-yard touchdown by sophomore running back Pierson Scott.

Even though they were trailing by 35 points, Seton Catholic put together a few more scoring drives in the third quarter. One of which was a kickoff return touchdown by sophomore running back Coree Edwards.  Then, in the next possession, Connelly found Fogerty for the second time of the night for a touchdown, this time it was for 16 yards.

In the fourth quarter, Gilbert Christian ran the clock out and would ultimately seal their victory after freshman defensive back Dusty Cook snagged an interception in the last minute of the game.

Carlson is very proud of his team's strong start and thinks they can be special.

“I think this team can be very special,” Carlson said. “We've got to keep working at it and keep trying to get better every day.”

Next up: 4-0 Gilbert Christian will host 1-3 Winslow. 2-2 Seton Catholic hosts #1 Ben Franklin.
