Sun Devils Stay Hot, Take Down NAU to Remain Perfect at Whiteman

TEMPE – Sun Devil men's tennis (4-1) stayed undefeated at home, taking down in-state foe Northern Arizona 6-1 on Sunday evening. The win is ASU's third straight and fourth at the Whiteman Tennis Center this season.


"It was a great team effort," head coach Matt Hill said. "We had a lot of guys who stepped up and played who haven't been playing as much. It's not easy to step in and play when you don't have as many reps and go up against a team that has a lol of fight and is really competitive like they are. You gotta find a way to put the pressure on and get off the courts and I think the guys did a great job at that today."


The Sun Devils came out the gates hot, with Christian Lerby/George Stoupe defeating NAU's Straker-Meads/Ziomber 6-1 and Nathan Ponwith/Max McKennon defeating Steele/Buzonics 6-3 to give the Sun Devils the doubles point and a 1-0 lead. Then, in singles play, Ponwith (6-2, 6-2) and sophomores Jonah Wilson (6-2, 6-1) and Tom Leblanc (6-3, 7-5) won in straight-sets to clinch the victory for the Sun Devils.


How it happened

The Sun Devils clinched the doubles point with Lerby/Stoupe winning 6-1 on court three and Ponwith/McKennon winning 6-3 on court two. The No. 1 pairings of Andrea Bolla/Tim Ruehl and Facundo Tumosa/Alex Groves was tied at 4-4 when their match was abandoned.


The first singles point came from Wilson, who defeated NAU's Buzonics 6-2, 6-1 on court six. Ponwith and Leblanc soon followed, as Ponwith defeated NAU's Tumosa 6-2, 6-2 and Leblanc defeated NAU's Ziomber 6-3, 7-5 to give ASU their third-straight victory of the week.
