HOUSTON, Tex. – The No. 25 Sun Devils (6-2) dominated the Wichita State Shockers (3-8) in Houston on Saturday afternoon, winning 4-0. The teams split the first two doubles matches, but a Sammi Hampton/ Marianna Argyrokastriti's 7-6 tiebreaker win on court 3 gave the Sun Devils the doubles point to start the day. From there, Ilze Hattingh, Argyrokastriti, and Cali Jankowski won the day for ASU.
The Sun Devils never looked back, as they took each of the first three singles matches to clinch their sixth victory of the season. Head coach Sheila McInerney thought the team could have performed better in doubles but was pleased overall with the Sun Devils' performance.
"I thought we could have played better in the doubles but fortunately we scraped it out," McInerney said. "We came out really strong in the singles and were able to dominate from start to finish. We won Ilze, Marianna and Cali's matches very quickly, which was nice to see. It's always good to get a road win and we look forward to tomorrow's match against a very good Rice team."
Doubles
The Sun Devils started the day with Giulia Morlet/Domenika Turkovic taking a 6-3 victory on court 2 and Hampton/ Argyrokastriti taking a 7-6 tiebreaker victory on court 3 to give the Sun Devils the double point.
Singles
The Sun Devils kept the momentum going as No. 37 Hattingh defeated Wichita State's Saidhujaeva 6-0, 6-0. Freshman Marianna Argyrokastriti followed suit, defeating Wichita State's Hsu 6-0, 6-0 and junior Cali Jankowski defeated Wichita State's Lazarova 6-1, 6-1 to clinch the victory for the Sun Devils. The remainder of the matches were not played out.
