MESA, Ariz. – Mountain View overcame a fourth-quarter comeback by Red Mountain and won in overtime 28-27 Friday night.
The Battle of Brown Road lived up to the hype from the jump.
The Toros built a lead in the first half before Red Mountain rallied in the fourth quarter to force overtime.
Mountain View ultimately prevailed in the extra period to earn the one-point victory.
The first quarter started slowly as both defenses stood strong, limiting scoring opportunities early into the game.
On the second drive for the Mountain Lions, they were able to strike first.
After a slow start, junior quarterback Dayne Silver connected with senior wide receiver Airreon Windom on a crosser that was taken all the way into the end zone.
The extra point extended the lead to 7-0 in favor of the Mountain Lions at the end of the first quarter.
Mountain View immediately responded in the second quarter after senior linebacker Preston Patterson recovered the fumble off of the botched toss.
This led to great field position for the Toros with just under nine minutes remaining in the half.
The Toros found themselves inside the 10-yard line after junior quarterback Brayden Merwin connected with junior wide receiver Te’o Weeks for a long pass.
The Toros were able to capitalize on the turnover once senior running back Coy Bodily fought his way into the end zone.
Mountain View converted the two-point attempt following the touchdown to create an 8-7 lead.
As time started to wind down in the first half, both defenses continued to battle and had an impact as teams traded possessions.
However, Mountain View was able to find another scoring opportunity late in the first half.
Finishing off a lengthy drive, the Toros were able to find the end zone as the clock expired in the first half.
Merwin kept his composure as the clock ticked down and was able to connect with senior wide receiver Vinny Uriarte for the sideline grab that boosted the Toros' lead to 15-7 entering halftime.
Even though they trailed early on, Uriarte mentioned you have to keep your head up at all times.
“Gotta stay locked in, can’t really get down; you gotta keep your head up,” Uriarte mentioned following the game.
In the third quarter, both defenses showed up strong and continued to have an impact, holding each other scoreless and preventing either team from gaining momentum.
Red Mountain even attempted a surprise onside kick to open the second half, but Uriarte recovered the ball.
The teams continued to trade possessions until Red Mountain finally put together a promising drive late in the third.
Silver connected with junior wide receiver Kaeden Weaver on two hefty passes, moving the Mountain Lions into Mountain View territory.
However, Mountain View held Red Mountain on a crucial fourth-down-and-one yard out from the end zone.
Heading into the fourth, Merwin connected with Weeks once again on a deep ball, landing the Toros on the Red Mountain logo.
The fourth quarter is where both teams put their foot on the gas.
The Toros continued their momentum entering the fourth after Bodily broke off for another successful run to move into the red zone.
Mountain View was able to finish off their success with a touchdown; Merwin called his own number and ran his way into the end zone.
After failing the extra point attempt, the Toros lead 21-7 with just over nine minutes remaining in the game.
Red Mountain then responded with a successful drive of their own, refusing to let the game slip away.
Silver led the Mountain Lions down the field and inside Mountain View territory after a long drive that was created off of Silver's rushing success.
With under four minutes remaining, Red Mountain finished the drive with a touchdown after Silver rushed his way in from a yard out.
The touchdown cut the deficit to 21-14 in favor of Mountain View.
The Toros received the ball back and were quickly shut down by the Mountain Lions defense, forcing a punt and giving Red Mountain an opportunity to tie the game.
The Mountain Lions took advantage of the situation, moving downfield as the clock continued to wind down.
As the clock was running down, Silver was able to connect on multiple quick passes to bring them to the one-yard line.
On their final play, Silver attempted a pass that was incomplete; however, there was a flag for roughing the passer, which gave Red Mountain one more opportunity for overtime.
On the final play of regulation, Silver powered his way into the end zone from one yard out to keep the game alive.
In overtime, the Toros started with the ball first.
After getting stopped through the first three plays, Merwin was able to rush in for the Toros on a crucial fourth down.
Red Mountain was able to quickly answer with a touchdown after Windom quickly made his way inside the 3-yard line.
Capping off the drive was junior running back Keyan Fagan, who was able to score the touchdown.
Yet this time, the Mountain Lions elected for a two-point conversion instead of an extra-point attempt and failed after Fagan was stuffed on the rush by the Toros defense.
The thrilling win improved Mountain View’s record to 5-2 as they prepare to head back home and face off against the 1-6 Casteel Colts.
“We’ve been picked against all season, and nobody really believes in us,” Toros head coach Andy Litten said following the victory.
Red Mountain, on the other hand, falls to 4-3 and looks to turn things around against 1-7 Gilbert on the road.
