On Friday night at Hohokam Stadium (home of the Oakland A's Spring Training), the Corona del Sol Aztecs defeated the Queen Creek Bulldogs 6-3.
With the win, the Aztecs are going back to Tempe Diablo Stadium (home of the LA Angels Spring Training) to play in their second straight 6A title game.Â
As the game concluded, Corona del Sol head coach Dave Webb shouted: “We’re going back home, home away from home.”
Webb said they had fond memories of their time last year at Tempe Diablo Stadium and hope to reclaim that magic for the championship game on Tuesday.
“It’s our goal to talk about getting there (Tempe Diablo Stadium,” Webb said. “It’s a goal from the beginning. I love the tradition, it (the 6A championship game) is always there.”
Even though they won, the Aztecs had to grind it out.
In the first inning, the Aztecs took control of an early lead.Â
At the top of the first inning, 2027 pitcher Conor Rae led the way, getting a strikeout and helping the Aztecs get three quick outs.Â
After getting it done on the mound in the first inning, Rae was then the leadoff hitter for Corona del Sol.Â
Rae hit a leadoff triple and set his team up early for success.Â
The Aztecs would then get on the board as 2027 center fielder Ben Jacobus grounded out, but it allowed enough time for Rae to reach home plate.
Feeding off the momentum, the Aztecs scored one more run in the first inning.Â
Corona del Sol 2026 right fielder Parker Williams smashed a ball to deep right field for an RBI double.Â
Scoring the run was Corona del Sol 2026 first baseman, Kellan Tom.Â
With one inning down, Corona del Sol led 2-0.Â
At the top of the second inning, Queen Creek put the pressure back on Corona del Sol.
The Bulldogs got on the board as Queen Creek 2026 Tyke Daniels hit an RBI double after hitting a ball down the left field foul line.Â
Scoring the run was Queen Creek 2026 Kobe Gomez.
Next up to bat was Queen Creek 2026 Grady Pratt, who hit a ball deep into right field and allowed Daniels to score the run.
The Bulldogs would then obtain their only lead of the game.Â
Queen Creek 2026 Jet Berry was able to find a gap over third base for an RBI single that brought Pratt in for the run.Â
With two innings down, Queen Creek held a 3-2 lead.Â
Fast forward to the fourth inning, Corona del Sol took back the lead.Â
The Aztecs came to life in the bottom of the fourth as they scored four runs.Â
Corona del Sol 2027 third baseman Colton Floyd hit a ball to center field for an RBI single that let Jacobus score.Â
Williams, who already had a double in the game, proceeded to hit a two-RBI triple to give the Aztecs the lead.Â
Scoring off the triple was Floyd and Tom.Â
Then rounding out the great inning was Corona del Sol 2026 infielder, David Moss.Â
Moss hit a line drive past second base for an RBI single that brought Williams in for the run.
Corona del Sol dominated in the fourth inning and gave themselves a 6-3 lead and never let go of it.
For the remainder of the game, Rae kept Queen Creek to minimal hits and didn’t let the Aztecs give up another run.
Rae has stepped up drastically.
With many injuries to pitchers this season for Corona del Sol, Rae has been one of the players to step up to the plate and deliver.Â
Last season, Rae didn’t even pitch an inning; now he is leading his team to a deep playoff push.Â
“I didn’t throw an inning (in 2025),” Rae said. “Stepping up our game, be there for our guys. Every person on the field, I would go to battle for those guys.”Â
Even though Corona del Sol won the 6A championship in 2025, they were not the favorites to win it this season.
They have a chip on their shoulders now as they look to defend their title.
“We got nothing to lose, we came into this not being the favorites,” Rae said. “During the games, we’re the most electric team. One more for our seniors, compete for them.”Â
Tuesday night, Corona del Sol will face the winner of Hamilton/Sandra Day O’Connor for the 6A title.
However, they are not worried about who they play; they will just show up and compete in the biggest game of the year.Â
“It’s a faceless dugout over there; we don’t care who we play,” Webb said. “Whoever shows up, we will show up.”Â
Next up: Corona del Sol will look to defend their 6A title when they take on Hamilton or Sandra Day O’Connor. Queen Creek's season is over.
