Dominance.
That’s the word that sums up ALA Queen Creek's win over Queen Creek on Thursday night.
The ALA Queen Creek Patriots got a 41-8 win over their rival, the Queen Creek Bulldogs. This marks their second straight win after an 0-5 start as they try to build momentum to turn their season around.
From the first drive, the Patriots made a statement about what energy they were going to bring against the Bulldogs.
The first drive for ALA Queen Creek featured a lot of different players getting the ball in their hands and using a good chunk of the clock.
The 5:20-minute drive was capped off by senior running back Bobby Nesbit, who ran it in for a 1-yard touchdown.
After forcing a three-and-out, the Patriots got the ball back on their own 10-yard line.
Running the ball was what ALA Queen Creek relied on for the long drive. It included a 30-yard running play from Nesbit and a 15-yard run by junior running back Nash Hall.
The drive concluded through the air, though, as senior quarterback Britton Dewitt found senior athlete and NAU commit Khalil Bender for the 33-yard touchdown.
Towards the end of the first quarter, Queen Creek was moving the ball down the field and even got into ALA Queen Creek territory. Disaster struck, though, when ALA Queen Creek junior athlete, Bryce Devlin, snagged an interception to give the Patriots the ball back.
Wasting no time, ALA Queen Creek added onto their lead.
After having a great drive before, Bender once again provided multiple big-time plays.
The first one was a huge 25-yard catch to set the Patriots up in the red zone. A few plays later, Dewitt connected with Bender for a 20-yard touchdown.
Now two games in, and after transferring from McClintock to ALA Queen Creek, Bender has fit right into his new team.
“I know I transferred over, but they brought me in like I was a part of here,” Bender said. “It’s been great moving over.”
Once again, the Patriots found themselves with the ball and another chance to score.
Four drives and four touchdowns for ALA Queen Creek as Dewitt found junior wide receiver Stetson Agne right at the goal line for a 23-yard touchdown.
It only got better for ALA Queen Creek before halftime.
A play that you don’t see very often happened as ALA Queen Creek senior defensive tackle Rex Curtis intercepted a screen pass and took it back to the endzone for six more points and the viral "Sexy Dexy" dance for the Patriots.
Curtis confirmed that it was his first interception, and he credited the whole defensive unit and his coaches.
“First interception for sure, super glad and excited I got to get that,” Curtis said. “It all goes down to the defense and my coaches.”
The cherry on top in the first half for ALA Queen Creek was when they yet again got another interception.
For the third interception of the half, it was senior linebacker Nash Cahoon who snagged it and prevented Queen Creek from gaining any momentum heading into halftime.
ALA Queen Creek led 35-0 at halftime and made sure to close out the game strong.
Queen Creek had the ball to start the second half, but they turned over the ball yet again.
The Patriots now had their fourth interception of the game as sophomore defensive back Jayden Brewer was able to get in front of the ball and snatch it away.
Needing something to go their way, Queen Creek was finally able to get some positive plays.
Moments after the Patriots intercepted the ball, the Bulldogs got it right back. Sophomore linebacker Brogan Moyers made a diving catch to get the interception and set Queen Creek up near the goalline.
Queen Creek was able to get on the board as their sophomore quarterback, Sawyer Hales, ran a quarterback sneak for a 1-yard touchdown.
After the string of positive plays, Queen Creek once again turned over the ball.
Near the end of the third quarter, ALA Queen Creek senior defensive back, Kaiden Arrieta, got the fifth interception for the Patriots.
Around midway through the fourth quarter was when ALA Queen Creek put up more points as Dewitt found his big target in junior tight end Talan Scott for a 4-yard touchdown.
Then, for the sixth and final time of the night, the Patriots got another interception. Devlin was the one to grab it and made it his second total of the game.
For the first six games of the season, ALA Queen Creek had no interceptions. The game against Queen Creek alone, they had six, and the head coach for the Patriots, Rich Edwards, knew his team would get over the hump after their slow start.
“Six passes, and we hadn’t had any prior to that,” Edwards said. “We thought the first five games, the gauntlet, that if we could grow up and mature during those first five games, we’d be alright, and I think we did.”
ALA Queen Creek had a brutal schedule and start to their season. They faced #3 Liberty, #2 Hamilton, #4 Chandler, #8 Red Mountain, and #12 Salpointe Catholic.
They started 0-5 but now sit at 2-5 after winning their last two games. The Patriots knew 2025 wouldn’t be easy, but they had to keep fighting.
“We told our guys all year at 0-5, we gotta keep grinding, we gotta trust our process, trust what we’re doing. We’ve had success in the past,” Edwards said. “They kept working; the last two weeks have shown some of that. To see that against a very good team is satisfying.”
Next up: 2-5 ALA Queen Creek will face another top team in 6A in 4-2 Mountain View. 4-3 Queen Creek will look to get back in the win column against 2-4 Desert Vista, who ALA Queen Creek beat 49-7 on Oct 3.
