#1 Campo Verde crushes Chaparral to win 2nd 5A title in first 3 season of AIA flag football

The Campo Verde Coyotes have dominated their 5A counterparts so much this season that many are calling for an open or to allow the Coyotes into 6A for flag football only.

The state title game was no different as they absolutely dominated Chaparral 57-0.

One of the main challenges for both teams, however, was the downpour of rain combined with lightning that went on all day Saturday.

Originally, the game was scheduled at 4 PM; however kickoff was not until 7 PM due to the weather.

Campo Verde head coach Brian Coger made sure his team was ready to go despite the delays.

“We let the girls relax and have fun a little bit,” Coger said. “An hour before, when we knew we were going to play at 7, that's when we locked in again.”

Locked in is exactly what Campo Verde did.

Throughout the entire game, their defense got stop after stop and helped their offense with great field position.

The offense capitalized as they scored on their opening drive.

The Coyotes junior quarterback, Amaya Moreno, connected with sophomore athlete Claire McMahon for a 9-yard touchdown.

Campo Verde then rattled off four more touchdowns before halftime.

Those included: Moreno's 2-yard rushing touchdown, Moreno's 1-yard rushing touchdown, and Moreno connecting with sophomore wide receiver Ella Mutters for a 3-yard touchdown. Then, to end the first half, Moreno connecting with sophomore wide receiver Oakley Dobratz-Blevins for a 24-yard touchdown.

Being a part of the team last year, Dobratz-Blevins wanted to change the script this season.

“Last year losing to Canyon View [in the semifinals in overtime] was hard, but this year we came back wanting it more,” Dobratz-Blevins said. “It’s special to have that trophy now.”

Everything kept seeming to go right for Campo Verde in the game.

Having five total touchdowns in the first half, Moreno added another one with a pass to junior wide receiver Jayda Haley for a 3-yard touchdown.

Transferring in from Mountain Pointe this season, Moreno made it to the 5A championship game herself with the Pride in 2024 but ultimately lost in the title game. This year, though, she made sure to be the one hoisting the trophy.

“I made a lot of sacrifices coming to Campo Verde,” Moreno said. “That’s why I transferred to Campo, to be able to connect with the girls and go out there and win the championship.”

Before the game ended, Campo Verde added two more touchdowns.

One of which came from their elite defense when the Coyotes' senior defensive back, Hailey Busch, was able to snag an interception and return it to the end zone.

The last touchdown and the last play of the game came from their senior quarterback, Izzy Pap, finding freshman wide receiver Brooklyn Lucchesi for a 10-yard touchdown.

Pap, who helped lead Campo Verde to the 2023 5A championship win, got to suit up one last time playing with her sisters.

“They’re more than teammates to me, they're my sisters,” Pap said. “It was such a beautiful way to end it, with each other.”

Campo Verde now becomes the only team in AIA history to win multiple state championships for flag football (at least until a potential Hamilton 6A title on Monday), but this team will be around for years to come.

“Hopefully, next is continuing to grow and get better,” Coger said. “We’ll see what happens next year.”
